Immediate Objectives of the Centre are:

  1. To provide the bridge between AU and EU member states and other regional organisations in migration research, policy and programmes in the context of development policy.

  2. To undertake and coordinate research and utilise research findings on all forms of migration to influence development policy in SSA countries as well as Regional Economic Communities (RECs), between SSA and the North and within the South.

  3. To develop a viable migration resource centre including a data hub and a library on various forms of migration, relying on African datasets -notably censuses and surveys and other data-colection systems - to avoid reliance on data procured exclusively in the North.

  4. To keep track of out-migration vis-a-vis in-migration within SSA and both flows and stocks of emigration from and immigration into SSA, ascertaining migrant characteristics as well as determinants and consequences of different types of migration.

  5. To provide diverse forms of training to individuals, institutions, countries, RECs and their development partners to further and share new knowledge and information on, and to build capacity in, analysing migration-development interrelations.

  6. To convene a variety of dialogue activities, including workshops, seminars and conferences for SSA countries, the REC member states and their development partners in the North as well as the South.

  7. To evolve migration and development policy coherence at national, regional and inter-regional levels, fostering cooperation in SSA countries, the AU, REcs and SSA-North or SSA-South cooperation.
